The Thanksgiving Feast

Way up North our produce is nothing short of terrible except when it's from here, so we found a solution! We joined a Organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) out of Seattle and they deliver boxes at a local business every Thursday. We chose to get a box every two weeks and this was our first (it came a day early).
We had a sleep over Wed night - Kat's first - and got up 3 hours before sunrise, about 6:00 am, to make bread, Sourdough pancakes with Blueberries and a full (mostly organic) Thanksgiving Feast. Michelle and her dog Tierza came by at 11:00 with the fresh bird and Jed entertained us by reading the "Hobbit".

Two months late... better than not at all

Fall is one of the best times to visit any place in Alaska, so we set out in an RV with the Smith family (Jed, Kim & Katrianna) to experience Denali... as it turned out, mostly in the rain so thank goodness we didn't decide to tent it! We visited the excellent Visitor's Center, found a blueberry or two, snapped some fall colors between clouds and took a walk that ended when we ran into a couple moose.

First entry

We took a short reconnaissance tour to Wrangell St. Elias National Park/Kennicott. This has been on our top 10 places to see in Alaska since we moved here and we finally got there... and it is now on our top 10 places everyone MUST see when they visit. In fact it was so cool, it's what prompted us to finally get this blog up and running.

Kennicott is a historic mining town located inside the Wrangell St. Elias National Park which is the largest national park in the US (equal to 6 Yellowstones). To get there from Anchorage involves a 5 hour/250 mile drive to Chitina, another 3 hour/60 mile journey on the McCarthy (Dirt) Road, a 1/2 mile walk to the town of McCarthy (not vehicle accessible) and a final 4 mile shuttle ride (or trek) finally ending at Kennicott. But it IS worth it!

We will definitely be returning - now that we know where to go, where to stay... we just need to go spend a week and enjoy it! Anyone interested in joining us, we're taking names on a first come, first served basis...
