The Paramount Theater in Oakland!

Who knew there was something in Oakland to write home about? But this is definitely worth writing about! The Paramount Theater in Oakland is a newly renovated, Art Deco theater built in 1931 complete with an organ, several lounges, plenty of plush public space and lots of Art Deco detailing. And they show old movies for $5 several times a month - we got to see "The Wizard of Oz" in Technicolor - along with vintage newsreels and cartoons accompanied by the organ.

Union Sq. the day after Christmas

We decided to brave Union Square the day after Christmas - mostly to check out the novelty of seeing people ice skate in a city that never freezes.

Oddly enough, it wasn't nearly as crazy as you'd think, mostly because so many people leave the city during the holidays. In fact, it's really the best time to visit because the city is relatively empty - not in an eerie way, just pleasantly so.

Annual Christmas Cookie Exchange

How many people can you fit in a studio apartment?!

I think the final count came to 18 adults, a 3-year old and an infant - that's what happens when you promise people cookies. And there were some great ones...unfortunately I was having so much fun taking pictures of the people and EATING the cookies I forgot to take pictures of them, so you'll have to take my word on it.

Cooking thru the storms

We may not get snow here in the Bay area, but we sure get some serious wind and rain storms. Luckily, with the produce bounty, there's always something to cook up when the rain starts.

We came up with a killer recipe for Brussels Sprouts - we had to do something with those $4 stalks - we fed them to all our friends at Thanksgiving and even the Brussels Sprout haters had good things to say. The secret is to saute garlic, pancetta and pine nuts together with thinly sliced Brussels sprouts. It seems to come out best if you cook the pancetta some first, toss the Brussels sprouts together with olive oil, garlic and pine nuts in a separate bowl, and then throw them in with the pancetta when it's almost cooked.

We baked up several kinds of homemade pizzas - Bob tried his hand at throwing the dough NJ-style.

And we made some great shortbread for the Cookie Exchange (the key is in the European butter).

And just so I don't have to call and ask my brother to look up the shortbread recipe once again, the proportions are: 1 lb. butter/1 c. sugar/ 4.5 c. flour. Flatten dough to 3/4" thick and cook on an ungreased baking sheet, at 300 degrees, for 1 hour.

Thanksgiving with friends

This year Thanksgiving was a group effort - and delicious because of it.

Matt & Jess carving the turkey (after some serious contemplation)...

Laura mashed up some amazing potatoes (don't watch how much butter she puts in)...

Bob cooked up his Brussels sprout concoction...

Petrea helped out wherever she could...

Logan whipped up his special fresh ground nutmeg whipped cream...

And everyone ate so much we had to take an hour long hike after dinner in order to make room for dessert!

Fall/Winter abundance

I bet you thought the Farmer's Market posts were done for a while... but they're not! Which I find an exciting statement in itself... so here's what's in season in November - Brussels sprouts, Jerusalem artichokes, regular artichokes, persimmons, nuts, apples and lots of different kinds of squash and potatoes.

Rootbeer tasting party

Here in California, wine tasting is a big thing - being non-conformists we (actually Heidi & Logan came up with the idea) decided to try rootbeer tasting instead.

It was a blind tasting complete with descriptive notes on each offering, notes like "very nice finish" and "vanilla undertones"...

The final vote - oddly enough Virgil's came in much lower than expected.

Fleet week

Fleet Week in San Francisco is the week the military has free displays down at the Marina AND puts on a free air show - the Blue Angels fly, among others. We just happened to be crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, about a 1/2 hour before the show was to start, so we found a parking spot and walked onto the Bridge to watch the show.

Since we were already on the Bridge, and it was such a gorgeous day, we walked a little after the show and got some close up photos of the structure...

Sunday drive down the coast

Like I mentioned in a previous post, we found a little town on the coast south of SF, Capitola, that we're fond of. In fact, Bob thinks he might like to move there - he's been seduced by the beach!

This Sunday afternoon, we decided to keep going past Capitola and ended up in Monterey/Pacific Grove, where we discovered a Monarch Preserve. Apparently the Monarch Butterflies migrate to this area around November, so we didn't see any, but we did find out where to look for them.

Nightime view of Union Square

We discovered something new and exciting... the Cheesecake Factory in San Francisco (there is only one in SF) is on the 8th floor of Macy's and has a huge outdoor patio overlooking Union Square. On a nice evening there's quite a view!

Hot autumn days

We had some really warm (90+), sunny days - warmer than it's been all summer, in fact - so Bob went out kayaking with our friend Adrienne. She loves to kayak, but it's been so chilly she hadn't gotten out much so we proposed a spontaneous outing one afternoon when it was in the mid-90's.

Beautiful day in the Park

I know you're probably thinking we spend a lot of time in Golden Gate Park, but the reality is there's just a ton to see, so we usually go somewhere new. This is the Rose Garden with some gorgeous roses!

And this is the view from the tower (which is free) at the de Young Museum - specifically a view of the living roof of the California Academy of Sciences.

The POD

Having witnessed how handy POD's are and discovered that they're significantly cheaper than storage units, we decided to go that route this time. It's pretty amazing how they can drop these things just about anywhere!

Quick plug for PODS: Instead of renting a Uhaul, loading and unloading it at a storage unit in a short window of time and then rushing to get the Uhaul back before closing time (we've done that a few times); we had a POD dropped off several days before we had to move, planned our packing strategically and - with A LOT of help from some very kind friends - the POD was completely packed in less than 3 hours!

And here's where it lives...

A little moving, a lot of time with friends

As it turns out, we've come to the end of our lease without having secured jobs, so we're once again packing up and going mobile.

We had a lot of help packing - Natalie catered lunch the first day...

And then Natalie, June and Kim packed up our entire kitchen and most of the living room in just a few hours!!

Since we had so much help with the packing, it took much less time than we'd anticipated and we had time to fit in some other fun things.

We took Kim up to the Marin Headlands to experience the fog rolling in...

Bob and Kim made a travel bag out of a coffee sack from Alvin's...

We took some friends from New Jersey on a tour of San Francisco including cable car rides,

Chinatown,

and dinner at the Spinnaker in Sausalito with an amazing sunset view!

Thanks everyone for all your help!!
